Pierce Brosnan Leads Charge to Save Whales from Sonar and Explosives
Written by Frances Beinecke, President, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council)
The U.S. Navy has announced new plans for training and testing with sonar and explosives — plans that spell disaster for whales.
If the Navy proceeds, more than 1,000 whales and other marine mammals — including rare and endangered species — could be killed over the next five years. There will be more than 5,000 cases of serious injury — such as permanent hearing loss or lung damage — and tens of millions of incidents in which marine mammals are harassed or harmed.
What’s even more shocking? These numbers come from the Navy itself!
NRDC has joined forces with actor and NRDC Member Pierce Brosnan to launch a campaign aimed squarely at forcing the Navy to change course and take steps to protect whales during routine training with sonar and explosives.
In this video, Pierce explains more about the grave dangers that the Navy’s use of sonar and explosives pose to whales and other marine mammals.
The scope of the Navy’s plans is staggering — threatening entire populations of marine wildlife off the East Coast, Southern California, Hawaii and the Gulf Coast.
The Navy would detonate more than 50,000 underwater explosives each year off the coast of Southern California alone. Hundreds of these explosives pack enough charge to sink a warship, which is exactly what they’re used for.
And the Navy’s high-intensity mid-frequency sonar will bombard whales with noise so intense — up to 236 decibels — that it can actually cause their internal organs to hemorrhage.
This type of sonar has already been linked to numerous marine mammal deaths and mass strandings around the world — from Greece to the Bahamas, from Japan to the UK to the United States. Just this week, investigators concluded that a 2008 mass stranding of 60 dolphins off the coast of Cornwall, England, was most likely caused by naval exercises involving active sonar.
The Navy knows full-well that its indiscriminant use of sonar and explosives will take a terrible toll. So it’s all the more distressing that they refuse to put common-sense precautions in place that could protect whales during routine training — especially since taking such steps would in no way compromise our national security.
NRDC has called on the Navy to take a number of simple, proven measures to safeguard whales from the deadly impact of its sonar and explosives— for example, avoiding key habitats where whales are known to migrate and raise their young.
But it seems the Navy will not budge from its old way of doing things. And it will not do so until it hears a terrific outcry from the American public.
Make your voice heard! Join Pierce in sending a message to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, urging him to direct the Navy to put safeguards in place to protect whales during routine training.
Here’s the bottom line: Whales should not have to suffer and die for military practice. It’s up to us to make sure they don’t — not now, not ever.

“Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is—whether its victim is human or animal —we cannot expect things to be much better in this world. We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity.” !! Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

INDONESIA MINISTER SHUTS DOWN DOLPHIN ATTRACTION - ALASAmid mounting public pressure demanding the government to stop the exploitation of dolphins for entertainment, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan finally caved in.On Wednesday afternoon, he visited Akame Dolphin Bay Restaurant, a tourist spot near Benoa Port, and announced that he would shut down its dolphin attraction. He ordered his staff to confiscate the dolphins and to immediately move them to the Dolphin Rehabilitation Center in Kemujan, Karimun Jawa.“We will release them back into their natural habitat but we have to complete some observations before doing so,” Zulkifli said. The floating restaurant, which is shaped like a ship and has a 130 square-meter pool in the middle, attracted hundreds of tourists who came to watch the dolphin show every day at the facility that was opened four months ago.The 1.7 meter-long dolphins were estimated to be seven to nine years old. They were caught in the northern part of Java sea.The Akame Dolphin bay restaurant had pocketed a permit that was issued by Wesut Seguni Indonesia, a Central Java based conservation organisation.Zulkifli deplored that the management of Akame Dolphin Bay Restaurant had placed the dolphins in a bad environment.“This environment is not suitable for dolphins. Wild life will be better for them,” he said.Zulkifli admitted that the Akame Dolphin Bay Restaurant had a permit for the entertainment activities.“The existing rule actually gives permission for these kind of activities. But I understand that many people have criticised this sort of activity. Many people have protested via Twitter. This attraction received the attention of the international community. Therefore, we believe that it should be stopped,” he stressed.Indonesia is regarded as home to the world’s last remaining traveling dolphin circuses.http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest+News/Relax/Story/A1Story20130215-402212.html

This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career. He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight. He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights. Even grievously wounded by picadors, he did not attack this man.

Torrero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment: “And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.

So buy and share, share, share! The aim is that the song will raise awareness of conservation issues and show how many species are on the brink of extinction mainly because of the greed of man. The song lays out some stark facts and begs the question “Where Will It End?” It forces us to ask what inheritance are we leaving our children? Will they grow up knowing the earth and animals the way we did? Or will they be left with a mere fraction of what we had? The haunting voice of the child sings “Take All You Need Now, It’s Only For Greed Now.” The moral choice is left to ignore what is happening or be part of the solution, so….join us, buy the song and BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. Today, a female great white shark had her fins hacked off in Inhambane, Mozambique (South Africa). Nets had been put up in the area by Chinese shark fin traders, as South Africa is known as the White Shark capital of the world and ,surely, their huge fins bring in pretty pennies to those who can barely make a living. This shark was dragged to shore and left to slowly suffocate. White Sharks have been listed as a protected species in South Africa since 1991, they are one of the most important predators of the sea. Their decline is not natural selection, it is completely human caused. It’s our fault.

This is horrendous. If you don’t think shark finning is an issue that needs to be addressed, please read up on it. Put your fears, your dislikes to the side.If these pictures were of a lion, of a wolf, of a human, how would you feel? This poor girl deserved to live, deserved to breed, not die in humiliation.

I’ve stated many times on my blog that I respect the cultural aspect of shark finning, I really do. But there are too many people in this world to abide by traditions that were deemed valid back when the number of humans wasn’t at a disgustingly high number.
