I remember “The rescue of Sam”, the badly burned koala, who became a bright spot for many amid the deadly fires that tore through Australia back in Feb 2009. Volunteer firefighter David Tree came across the koala walking on her scorched paws in a charred forest in Mirboo North, northeast of Melbourne, Aussieland. However, very sadly, Sam became the poster child for another tragedy facing Australia’s Koalas. It was discovered that Sam was ravaged by the STD chlamydia that is decimating the Koala population and had to be put down. It is still not known how the disease came to be endemic in Australian Koalas. A very sad twist to what was a ray of light in the aftermath of the bushfires. RIP Sam xx
